Sensual Night
Curated by Mengyi Xu

"Sensual Night" uses the night as a metaphor to reveal how life’s instincts are crushed under the gears of efficiency and algorithms in modern society. When daylight compresses emotions into symbols of profit and loss, and human warmth is reduced to quantifiable metrics, this exhibition seeks to retrieve those primal and genuine sensations—offering a place for the subtle tremors that stir deep within us.
Roland Barthes once wrote that the essence of striptease is not nudity itself, but the viewer’s belief that “the nakedness they see is an allowed sign.” This mirrors how modernity tames sensibility: people gradually believe that “only emotions that can be calculated are legitimate,” under the mesh of instrumental reason. Through multiple distinct perspectives, the exhibition seeks to break this cognitive alienation: the sea mist of the north and the humid heat of the south unfold a cross-regional dialogue; present reality and distant fantasy merge across time and space; fragments of memory piece together the self; attentive observation of nearby things threads together stories between individuals. These perspectives allow the world to reappear.
The sea breeze, grains of sand, water vapor, and daylight of Aranya are not mere backdrops, but poetic mediums that nurture the works. Every piece has been “tailor-made” for this site: lenticular panels shift with light and shadow, film strips flutter in the wind, water vapor veils acrylic with a soft blur, and semi-transparent fabric shimmers in sunlight. Cold industrial materials, when joined with elements of nature, gain a soul that breathes with feeling.
We invite you to step into One Night to encounter expressions of poetry, memory, desire, solitude, and the primal pulse of life. Here, you are encouraged to cast off the constraints society imposes, to touch, awaken, and affirm the self that belongs to the truth of the night. The exhibition offers no standard answers; instead, it builds a spiritual enclave through light and shadow. As in Aranya’s utopian vision, the meaning of “seeing” lies not in conquering territory, but in releasing fixed frameworks and allowing perception to flow like a tide across the boundaries of self and other—when, in the darkness, the untamed and authentic self emerges, illuminated by and illuminating the reflection of the world.
